Rikers Island Inmate Recaptured After Fingerprint Room Bolt

Image
By Alicia Cruz The Black Urban Times Freedom was short lived for a Rikers Island inmate who gave a corrections officer aboard the 413.17-acre prison facility the slip. Daniel Sanchez was in custody, without bail, on a first-degree murder charge when he bolted while CO's were trying to fingerprint him. Earlier in the day, the slippery inmate was charged with tampering with a window in his cell at the George Motchan Detention Center aboard the Island. Three captains and six corrections officers were treated for minor injuries sustained while attempting to subdue the 24-year-old wanna-be Houdini. I'm sure Sanchez can add attempted escape and assault on government officials to his murder and tampering charges. Back in July, a fire forced the evacuation of 200 inmates on the Island after smoke was detected coming from a heating unit in the George Motchan Detention Center. The two-alarm blaze destroyed several inmate dormitories, said Correction Department spokesperson Sharman Stein...

Mike Lupica on Plaxico Post Shooting Attitude

Image
Plaxico Burress still acts like somebody else shot him. So it is a good thing you don't have to do any time for missing the point, the way you do real time for shooting yourself in the leg with a Glock .40 you are not licensed to carry in the city of New York, or anywhere else on the night of Nov. 28, 2008. He still needs to stop acting as if he's just one more victim of guns in America. Burress has a right to be angry about what happened to him, about having to go to jail for an accident that follows a dumb mistake: Taking the Glock with him for this night of fun: Dinner at an Applebee's in Jersey, then to a strip club called HeadQuarters, finally to the Latin Quarter on Lexington Ave. where the gun went off.
