Bronx responds to Haiti tragedy

Borough's Caribbean residents show support By Daniel Beekman Bronx Times-Reporter In two decades as a clergyman, Rev. Nathanael Saint-Pierre has never worked so many hours, consoled so many congregants, seen so many tears. Saint-Pierre heads the Haitian Congregation of the Good Samaritan Episcopal Church on E. 219th Street in the Bronx and has led the borough’s response to the earthquake that devastated Haiti on Tuesday, January 12. “We Haitians in New York City are sad and frustrated,” he said. “I have never had to face such hard issues.” Saint-Pierre was fortunate not to lose any family members in the disaster but many of his congregants did. More have struggled to contact family members and friends in hastily constructed shelters amid the ruble. Good Samaritan has gathered food and donations for those trapped on the impoverished Caribbean island and Haitians trapped here in New York City as well. “One of my [congregant’s] families lost six people,” Saint-Pierre said. “One man ...

Pedro Pan plan for Haiti unlikely to happen

BY CAROL MARBIN MILLER cmarbin@MiamiHerald.com Florida is unlikely to see a wave of Haitian children orphaned by last week's killer earthquake, as Haitian and U.S. leaders do not favor a recreation of the famed 1960s Pedro Pan effort that rescued thousands of children from communist Cuba, the state's top social service administrator said Tuesday. ``The Haitian civil government is starting to reemerge,'' said Florida Department of Children & Families Secretary George Sheldon, who has been meeting with state, county and federal leaders for several days to coordinate refugee resettlement efforts. ``The desire of the Haitian people, to the extent that this can be done, is for the children to be cared for in Haiti,'' Sheldon added. ``That is their preference.'' TOO FRAGILE Florida and U.S. government leaders, Sheldon added, are also reluctant to airlift hundreds or thousands of orphans because of conc...

Not Again! Another Aftershock Rocks Haiti; 6.1

ASSOCIATED PRESS A strong earthquake struck Haiti on this morning, shaking buildings and sending screaming people running into the streets only eight days after the country's capital was devastated by a previous quake. The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.1 magnitude quake hit at 6:03 a.m. (1103 GMT) about 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince in Jacmel, Haiti. It struck at a depth of 13.7 miles (22 kilometers) but was located too far inland to generate any tidal waves in the Caribbean. Wails of terror rose Wednesday from frightened survivors of the apocalyptic quake that struck eight days ago as people as people poured out of unstable buildings. It was not immediately possible to ascertain what additional damage the new quake may have caused. Last week's magnitude-7 quake killed an estimated 200,000 people in Haiti, left 250,000 injured and made 1.5 million homeless. A massive international aid effort has been launched, but is struggling with ove...
