EAST RUTHERFORD — A former northern New Jersey high school teacher has been arrested on charges he engaged in inappropriate sexual conduct with a student. The former Becton Regional High School teacher was arrested Saturday after an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and the East Rutherford and Carlstadt police departments. Prosecutor John Molinelli says an investigation revealed the 29-year-old man had been exchanging sexually explicit pictures and messages with a 16-year-old student. The former teacher faces charges of criminal sexual contact, endangering the welfare of a child and official misconduct. Authorities say the man taught math at the school and was a former soccer coach. He has since resigned. Bail is set at $100,000. His arraignment is set for Tuesday.

The dirt on 'filthiest' of NY's hotels

Image
By GINGER ADAMS OTIS It's the hotel from hell. For $84, visitors to the New York Inn can snag a reeking room complete with musty mold, strange hairs in the bedsheets and muck-encrusted windows with views of neighboring cement walls. The Times Square inn -- voted the nation's sixth-filthiest hotel and worst in the Big Apple last week by travelers on Tripadvisor.com -- is a throwback to the dirty old days of the 1970s, when hotels like this one rented rooms by the hour, not the week. The beat-up facade on Eighth Avenue, near the corner of West 47th Street, sports a faded blue and white sign, and inside, guests are greeted by a smiling clerk who waves them up a rickety staircase. Zandy Mangold WHAT A DUMP! The New York Inn was voted sixth-dirtiest hotel in the US. In Room 307, The Post found orange mold in the shower, a chipped toilet seat, ill-fitting ceiling tiles stained with water and piles of dust behind the head...

'Gypsy' duo hits 45th Precinct again

Image
By Daniel Beekman Bronx Times-Reporter The dastardly duo that robbed senior homeowners in Zerega, Pelham Bay and Throggs Neck in 2009 is still on the loose. They hit Pelham Bay again on Tuesday, January 12. At least cops know more about the duo that they did in September, when the burglars first appeared in the 45th Precinct. George John, 29, a 5-foot-8 160 pound white male, poses as a “water department” worker. His partner, named by the New York Post as Steven Demetro, a 5-foot-7 230 pound white male, slips in to pocket cash and jewelry. The talented grifters belong to a ring of gypsy crooks, a police source said. They speak Italian and target seniors who live alone. John and Demetro were last spotted in southern Brooklyn, where they worked a similar scam. On January 12 at around 11 a.m., a Burr Avenue homeowner was fooled. The crooks asked to check his water. One kept the homeowner busy in his kitchen while his partner, dispatched to “check on th...

Visit old Newark in photographs

Image
BY MARK S. PORTER The Montclair Times There’s Newark City Hospital’s first ambulance, pulled by one horse. Behind the wooden wagon, a bearded doctor stands in the snow holding his medical bag. Date of this photograph: 1886. Clad in suits and ties, scores of company employees are seated in the dining room of the Mutual Benefit Insurance Building, newly opened in 1927 to join Newark’s several other insurance company headquarters. The only women visible in the image are the waitstaff. Despite the weight of the barrels of beer on their shoulders, four employees of Krueger Brewery of Newark beam for the camera as they pose with the first brews produced after the repeal of the 18th Amendment on April 7, 1933, marking the end of Prohibition. "Historic Photos of Newark" is a tome of images that span about 85 years of the city’s existence. In the book are vibrant scenes of street life in New Jersey’s largest metropolis, with photos of ...

Priest shortage leaves faithful alone on sickbeds

NEW ORLEANS - It was John B. Baus's 82nd birthday. When he was getting ready to go out with his wife, he had a heart attack and ended up on his way to the emergency room instead. Doctors there worked to stabilize him and performed surgery to implant a pace maker. Mary Adele Baus, his wife, went home after the surgery, assured that her husband was resting comfortably. Instead, at 3 a.m. doctors were working frantically with oxygen and electric paddles to keep Baus alive. In the midst of the effort Baus asked for a Roman Catholic priest, fearing death was only moments away. "He said 'I'm a dying man, and I want to see a priest,'" Mary Baus remembered. "All they said was that they didn't have one." Baus survived, but his wife said it was a traumatic event that left both her and her husband shaken. "There used to be a chaplain available if you needed him," she said. "Or you could get a priest to come to the hospital. Now it's not f...

Ron Artest: My Letter to Tiger Woods

Image
Dear Tiger, In reading the statements you have made, I can tell you are a stand up guy. Please remember only Jesus is perfect. You made a mistake and you admitted your infidelity. I have made the same mistakes. Before I got married to my wife, I had a baby with another young lady, after I already had two by my girlfriend who is now my wife. We also had another baby which makes three for us and four for me. Two boys and two girls. My wife is a much better wife than I am a husband. We still argue and disagree after being together 16 years. and I still cope with the fact that there are so many women out there and I choose to stay loyal to my wife. I want to be home every night, but with traveling I can’t, and sometimes I might want to go to a bar or club and be one of the fellas. Most of the time I stay in, because I have my kids and wife. I cannot sit here and say the thought to have many women has never crossed my mind. If I were Jesus I could. I have known my wife for 16 ye...
